I decided to make this DIY baby mobile the Tuesday night before Thanksgiving and two days before my baby’s due date! I had researched what I wanted to make for quite a while so it was just a matter of making it at this point. I had all the materials ready. I had searched on a lot of baby sites and Etsy for the perfect baby mobile but I kept thinking I can totally do this myself. I had bought the felt balls off of Etsy maybe a year ago I was going to make for a wall hanging. I got the bamboo hoop in the yarn section at Michaels. The thread and needle came with the felt balls. I just wasn’t sure exactly how I wanted the whole thing to look.

I liked the colors of the felt balls. They had a fall/vintage/calm vibe that I really liked. They also went really well with the whole casual space theme I was going for. Here are the supplies I needed and how I made it. The fun part about this DIY is that you can really do this however you want. You can clump a couple of balls together instead of individually evenly spacing them out.

SUPPLIES:

Felt Balls – You can make them yourself starting with wool yarn (there are tons of youtube videos on how to make them) or I ordered these exact felt balls from here. This also comes with the string and good sized needle (bigger than a regular sewing needle). I had extra string on hand but didn’t need it.

Bamboo Hoop – I got this at Michaels in the yarn/sewing section. I used the inner bamboo circle and will save the outer hoop for another project.

That’s it and all together this project was under $10. The hoop was 97¢ and the felt balls were $8. I am sure I paid a shipping/handling charge but can’t remember since I bought the felt balls a while ago for another project before Baby Z even existed!

HOW-TO:

You need to come up with a plan. How do you want this to look when it’s done? I decided I wanted some order so I kept it simple by each string being the same color. I organized all the felt balls by color. I kept it interesting by playing with scale. All the blue hues are on the longer strings and evenly distributed. The warmer hues are on shorter string with only three balls on each shorter string and there is a lot more space in between each ball.

I tied the strings to the bamboo hoop. Thread the needle on the other untied end and fed the felt balls through the needle. Super easy, just a little time consuming. Start to finish, with trouble shooting, one load of laundry to fold and dinner to make, it took me about 3 hours to make. I love how it turned out! Let me know if you try this at home!

Another fun idea is to make this a wall hanging instead of a mobile. You would just need four or five strings hanging from the bottom instead of all around like a mobile. It would look really pretty hanging on a wall. Which I found out while hanging it vertical on a doorknob while making it.
