Some projects take F O R E V E R and this was one of them. I was originally inspired by this piece of art that you use to see all over Emily Henderson’s instagram and blog. I actually had a really hard time finding it but you can check out her epic yarn hanging here. I even got a dowel and a million pieces of different color yarns to start but it never felt right. All the different colors looked so pretty in the linked piece but I don’t think it’s really me.
So I slowly changed the original concept from yarn hanging from a horizontal line to a circle. I found this 12 inch circle in the fake flower accessories aisle. (I think made out of particle board not sure.) I bought it knowing I needed it but not quite sure for what yet. Then when I decided to pull the plug on the yarn I noticed next to it the embroidery hoops. So cheap and the inner circle is perfect for these needs and less expensive.
SUPPLIES LIST:
- scissors (duh)
- yarn (you can really play with texture and thickness here. Get anything that appeals to you.) Here is where I got mine. They looked like this but I picked individual colors and got a variety of different brands.
- hoop or wood circle I would pick one up from here or here or here or here. I could not find the original craft ring I used but the links above will be great substitutes.
HOW TO MAKE:
Here is how I put the yarn hanging together. I laid out the yarn colors in the order I wanted it to hang. Then I roughly guessed how long I wanted it to hang taking in consideration that the yarn would be folded in half. Then I looped the folded-in-half-yarn around the circle and put the two loose ends through the looped end and pulled it tight. Repeat until you have the desired amount. That’s it really. Super easy! You can give it a hair cut at the end or let it hang wild at different lengths. You can cut it in a v or an inverted v or at an angle! So many options! I plan to make more and play with texture and thickness of the yarn.
I bought the materials so long ago I do not know how much I actually spent. The yarn bundles are around 79¢ each and the hoop was around $5. I want to say this was under $20 to make but maybe even less. Let me know if you have any questions on how to make this!
